Graduated Licensing Program (GLP)

Graduated Licensing Program (GLP)

The Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) is a system that helps new drivers gain experience and develop safe driving habits. The GLP was introduced in British Columbia in 1998 and has been shown to be effective in reducing the number of traffic crashes involving young drivers.

The GLP has three stages:

  1. Learner’s Permit: In the learner’s permit stage, drivers are not allowed to drive unsupervised. They must always have a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old in the passenger seat with them.
  2. N (Novice) License: In the N (Novice) license stage, drivers are allowed to drive unsupervised, but they are subject to certain restrictions, such as a curfew and a limit on the number of passengers they can carry.
  3. Full License: In the full license stage, drivers are no longer subject to any restrictions.

The length of time that drivers must spend in each stage of the GLP varies from driver to driver. Drivers can move from one stage to the next by meeting certain requirements, such as completing a certain number of driving hours and passing a road test.

The GLP is a valuable tool for helping new drivers learn how to drive safely. By following the rules of the GLP, new drivers can reduce their risk of being involved in a traffic crash.

In addition to the GLP, there are a number of other things that new drivers can do to improve their safety on the road. These include:

  1. Getting as much practice driving as possible.
  2. Always driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old in the passenger seat with you.
  3. Obeying all traffic laws.
  4. Being aware of the dangers of driving, such as distracted driving and drunk driving.
  5. Being patient and don’t take risks.

By following these tips, new drivers can help to keep themselves and others safe on the road.

The GLP is a valuable program that has helped to reduce the number of traffic crashes involving young drivers in British Columbia. If you are a new driver, I encourage you to learn more about the GLP and take advantage of the resources that are available to help you become a safe and confident driver.

Here are some additional benefits of the GLP:

  1. Reduced risk of accidents
  2. Increased driving skills
  3. Improved hazard perception
  4. Increased confidence behind the wheel

If you are a new driver in British Columbia, I encourage you to take advantage of the GLP. It is a valuable program that can help you become a safe and confident driver.

Please note that appearing for an ICBC Road Test prior to completing the GLP course will result in voiding the GLP Designation. For more information, please visit our FAQs section.
